Brothers Emerging from a Shared Meal and Spirit

By Jeremy Bell

I am going to highlight Christian agreement. Finding points of agreement helps build unity among people. Often, disagreements are in the application of fundamental ideas. I will share how Psalm 22 supports some salvation fundamentals. I will continue with posting Hebrews 2: 9 – 17 directly afterwards because this New Testament writer refers to it. Understanding the unity across scripture is excellent theological practice. Color highlights of this Psalm are further detailed in my book, Psalms in Motif Visualization.

In the week leading up to the death of Jesus, Jesus and His disciples were making Passover plans. Here are highlights taken from the book of Luke.

Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching. The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put Jesus to death, for they feared the people. Satan entered into Judas, who was also called Iscariot, who was counted with the twelve (not yet brothers). He went away, and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them. They were glad, and agreed to give him money. He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude. The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover must be sacrificed.

The disciples prepared the Passover. When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve apostles. He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in God’s Kingdom.” He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, “Take this, and share it among yourselves, for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until God’s Kingdom comes.”

He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!”

The disciples and all followers of Jesus symbolically eat bread at a time we call communion. As brothers and sisters, we dine at the same table of the same life source. We ingest the living God and as individuals, we share in the One God, drawing life from Him. We eat, we are satisfied, and we praise Him. There are no restrictions or works of earning we bring to enjoy this gift. All are equal from the garbage collector to the pastor. From the murderer to the social worker. This is a unified humility in which we all ask for mercy rather than recounting our good deeds. We come as step siblings to feast. When Jesus gifts the Holy Spirit, we become brothers and sisters in spirit.

Jesus was executed on the cross, betrayed by His close friend, denounced by the chief priests, and killed by them in connection with the Roman authority. This apparent temporary life of His died and His permanence was revealed when He rose from the grave and exited the tomb three days later. Living and feeding forever, His disciples and all Jesus followers would then live forever and praise Him forever as brothers and sisters. His payment is infinite for sin. For those who accept His payment for their sin, it is paid in infinity. But there are those who will not accept it and so, it is not applied. Without His infinite payment, then they are left on their own to pay for turning against God and relying on their own wisdom and hard work to live.

Hopefully that gives some perspective and things to consider while preparing to hear or read this Psalm. They are by no means the only perspectives or considerations, just the ones right now. So… without further hesitation, here is Psalm 22 and Hebrews 2: 9 – 17.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?
My God, I cry in the daytime, but you don’t answer;
in the night season, and am not silent.

But you are holy,
you who inhabit the praises of Israel.

Our fathers trusted in you.
They trusted, and you delivered them.
They cried to you, and were delivered.
They trusted in you, and were not disappointed.

But I am a worm, and no man;
a reproach of men, and despised by the people.
All those who see me mock me.
They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying,
“He trusts in Yahweh.
Let him deliver him.
Let him rescue him, since he delights in him.”

But you brought me out of the womb.
You made me trust while at my mother’s breasts.
I was thrown on you from my mother’s womb.
You are my God since my mother bore me.
Don’t be far from me, for trouble is near.
For there is no one to help.

Many bulls have surrounded me.
Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.
They open their mouths wide against me,
lions tearing prey and roaring.

I am poured out like water.
All my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax.
It is melted within me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd.
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.

You have brought me into the dust of death.

For dogs have surrounded me.
A company of evildoers have enclosed me.
They have pierced my hands and feet.

I can count all of my bones.
They look and stare at me.
They divide my garments among them.
They cast lots for my clothing.

But don’t be far off, Yahweh.
You are my help. Hurry to help me!
Deliver my soul from the sword,

my precious life from the power of the dog.
Save me from the lion’s mouth!
Yes, you have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen.

I will declare your name to my brothers.
Among the assembly, I will praise you.

You who fear Yahweh, praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, glorify him!
Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Israel!

For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted,
Neither has he hidden his face from him;
but when he cried to him, he heard.

My praise of you comes in the great assembly.
I will pay my vows before those who fear him.

The humble shall eat and be satisfied.
They shall praise Yahweh who seek after him.
Let your hearts live forever.

All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to Yahweh.
All the relatives of the nations shall worship before you.

For the kingdom is Yahweh’s.
He is the ruler over the nations.

All the rich ones of the earth shall eat and worship.
All those who go down to the dust shall bow before him,
even he who can’t keep his soul alive.

Posterity shall serve him.
Future generations shall be told about the Lord.

They shall come and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born,
for he has done it.

[ Hebrews 2: 9 – 17 ]

But we see him who has been made a little lower than the angels, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone. For it became him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many children to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying,

“I will declare your name to my brothers.
Among the congregation I will sing your praise.”

Again, “I will put my trust in him.” Again, “Behold, here I am with the children whom God has given me.” Since then the children have shared in flesh and blood, he also himself in the same way partook of the same, that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For most certainly, he doesn’t give help to angels, but he gives help to the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he was obligated in all things to be made like his brothers, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.

[ John 1: 10-13 ]

Jesus was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Jesus spoke to His disciples. “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and have seen him. He who has seen me has seen the Father. Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.“

“I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever: the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him and doesn’t know him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you. Because I live, you will live also. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.”

[ Matthew 28: 18-20 ]

After Jesus rose from the dead, He came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone. For it became him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many children to glory; those He would call brothers and the nations He would continue to call through them. How might all the ends of the earth remember without being told? How will relatives and future generations know without people proclaiming?

Jesus paid the death price that everyone owed, except Himself, in order to have brothers and sisters eternally. These are our brothers and sisters, not some family of a priest or pastor. The directive to tell others is not a religious right, it is an act of love for those of us who recognize our humility toward God. That we need food and have nothing to trade for it. Out of mercy, God gifted food, and we ate. He wants us to share food with others.

There is a survival nature that deceives us into thinking we can work and have something to trade for this food. But this is a nature that misses the mark, misses God, and misses truth. God calls it sin. But God has devised a way for that nature to be reborn to hit the mark, to connect with God, and to rest in the truth. This is the nature of Jesus, the Nature of Joy.

This is a reliable translation, but it is always good to read other translations as well. Biblegateway.com has a multitude of translations to read from. It is a great resource.

Another great resource is Biblehub.com. There are multiple translations, commentaries, and so much more. Great research can be done on this platform.

One more I use regularly is Gotquestions.org. This is a great site to answer questions and find threads of related questions.

There are many resources. The key is that God wants relationship directly with you, the individual. His primary source for revealing who He is and growing in intimacy is His word, the scriptures. Don’t just read for instruction. Analyze and read for understanding. Explore, ask questions, and be transformed in Jesus every moment you possibly can. There is no dispute this is a key desire of God. People are brough to the Father, in the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit. This… This is the Nature of Joy.
